The College was named "The College of Engineering, Vizagpatnam" at the time of its establishment in 1946 by the then Government of the composite Madras State. It is situated on a sprawling campus of 110 acres filled with greenery. It is virtually in a mango grove. It is located in the port city "Kakinada" though the Foundation stone reads as "Vizagpatnam", due to historical reasons. It was supposed to have been established in Vizag. Due to the efforts of town elders like Lakkaraju Subba Rao Garu, this campus remained in Kakinada. Andhra University started a new Engineering College in Vizag later. The Kakinada town is fast developing and is located on the East coast of the Indian peninsula. Over the generations, the city contributed significantly to the political literacy and cultural heritage of the country. The college was affiliated with Andhra University, Vizag. It has contributed to the growth of the Nation through its students who grew to great heights. On 2nd October 1972, the college became a constituent college of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) through legislation, along with other sister institutions under the control of the then Director of Technical Education, Government of Andhra Pradesh. In the year 2003, the college has become autonomous.
The three logos of the institution were shown above for different periods of life of this institution.The college site has been declared as head quarters for a new University with effect from 20th August, 2008 with Prof Allam Appa Rao as its first Vice Chancellor and now it is known as Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Kakinada. Apart from 2 Constituent colleges at Kakinada and Vijayanagaram, 221 colleges are affiliated to this University in the districts of Srikakuam, Vijayanagaram, Visakhapatnam, East Godavari, West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur and Prakasam. The Principal is the administrative and academic Head of the College. He was assisted by the Vice-Principal and the College Academic Committee in academic matters; and assisted by the Deputy Registrar in administrative matters. The placement and training center of the College helped every year a good number of students in securing employment in reputed organizations.
